Google Pixel 3 to use Camera Sensor of Sony for Front-End Camera

Though Sony has stopped selling their devices long back, they are still in demand in the market.  Its camera sensors are still dominating in the smartphone industry. You can count the number of companies that do not use Sony’s camera sensor in their smartphones on your fingers.

The imaging sensor is not the only parameter that could tell the clarity or performance of the phone’s camera.  There are very few smartphones such as Samsung Galaxy S9, Galaxy Note 9, Sony Xperia XZ2, and Huawei P20 Pro, which record slow-motion videos. Samsung Galaxy S9 is proficient of recording at 960 frames per second while Galaxy Note 8 and Galaxy S8 records videos with 480 frames per second.

The DRAM present on Galaxy S9 and Galaxy Note 9 is responsible to pass frames to the image buffer and then stores it to the storage device.  This is at most important to capture the images at the speed of 960 frames per second.

Let’s crave some more details of Pixel 3 and Pixel 2 smartphones

Pixel 2 Cameras:

Talking about Google Pixel 2, it has a single rear-facing camera, which embraces Sony IMX362 sensor.  The same sensor is found in Moto G5 Plus, HTC U11, and almost all series of Asus Zenfone 4. While the first-generation Pixel 2 smartphones work on Sony IMX 378 camera sensor.  Though, it does not contain a built-in camera it is one of the best smartphones in the market. Google’s imaging engineers have done an excellent job on the Google Camera App and have benefited many among the crowd.

Pixel 3 Cameras:

Pixel 3 phone has updated its camera sensor to Sony IMX363, which is also present in Asus ZenFone 5Z and Xiaomi POCO F1.  In addition to this, it also comprises of a wide-angle lens in the Sony IMX355. Google has not detailed out the exact capabilities of Sony camera sensors but has displayed some of the specification sheets for the smartphones along with the sensors.

For Sony IMX363:

  • Rear camera with 12.2 dual-pixel camera
  • Spectral along with flicker sensor
  • View field of 76 degree
  • Optical and electronic image stabilization
  • Autofocus quality with dual pixel phase detection

For Sony IMX355:

Normal angle:

  • The aperture size of f/1.8
  • View field of 75 degrees
  • Autofocus quality with phase detection
  • Front camera of 8 megapixel

Wide angle:

  • The aperture size of f/2.2
  • View field of 97 degrees
  • Autofocus quality with phase detection
  • Front camera of 8 megapixel

Video Recording:

  • 720p at 30 frames per second
  • 480p at 30 frames per second
  • 1080p at 30 frames per second
