As Google is closing down the services and apps that are not well received by the users, Google Messages app stood out from the crowd. Now, the app has crossed 500 million downloads from Google Play Store. Google is focusing on implementing the various features in the Messages app, which is making it unique and useful for more and more users. Google’s Messages app for Android does come with valuable features like context-aware recommendations, a dark mode, RCS support, and a web interface. Due to these features and aggressive promotion from Google, it has now the part of the top 25 messaging apps on Google Play Store and simultaneously crossed 500 million downloads.

It is not quite sure why Google is promoting the Messages app with Android users, as it is not the part of Google Apps, which is the pre-installed Google services package for Android smartphones. The Google Apps package does come with lots of other communication options like Duo and Hangouts but not the Messages. Even though it is not part of Google’s Mobile services collection, it managed to attain installations in 500 million Android devices.

Only the Pixel series and the devices with Android One program come with Google apps like Calendars and messages. Another OEM replaces the Messages app with proprietary or third-party apps. This means, there are millions of users remaining to install this app to replace the Messaging app that is installed by default in the device. For now, Google Messages app is available on the Google Play Store to download for all devices running on Android 4.0 or above.
